Church of Saint Nicholas
The church, buried by sediment from
the Myros River, was excavated in the 1800s.
(You can
see a sliver of the Myros to the right.) As
you can see, restorations are still
ongoing (and some of the structural ones done in the 1800s are disputed in
their accuracy) but the rock church is preserved in impressive detail, down
to the sarcophaguses and faded murals depicting Christian rituals and icons,
including one of Saint Nicholas. The entry
fee is 50,000 Turkish Lira. (Standard
price for just about any tourist attraction in Turkey.) Operating hours are 8am
to 7pm.
