YEAR OF THE TIGER
PUBLIC CARRIER TRUCKS
As you go from town-to-town in the Kumaon, you will have two transport choices: buses and
public carrier trucks. You'll probably end up taking buses the most, but don't pass up the chance
to try the trucks. In the towns, ask the drivers of any trucks headed in your direction if they have
space. You can ride up front or in the back, but as a foreigner, you will almost certainly be
invited up front. You will have to pay, but the charge is small. The cab will be filled with the
driver, members of the driver's family, the truck boy, etc. It is a real cultural experience. Indeed,
throughout the ride, and this entire walkabout, you should expect to be the subject of great
curiosity.
