GREAT CUROSITY
The normal route through the Kumaon proceeds north from Naini Tal to Almora. At the end of
the ridge leading up from Almora, there is an ashram which welcomes travelers. You can stay
there for months if you want. The ridge has a dramatic view of the Nanda Devi massif. Nanda
Devi, at 7,800 meters, is the second highest mountain in India.
At the very end of the ridge is a temple to Siva, one of the principle Hindu deities, the god of
destruction and reproduction.
From Almora, you head north towards Nanda Devi, perhaps all the ways to the mountains, where
there are many worthwhile treks. The nearest is the two week hike up to the Pindari Glacier.
Bring a tent and a stove. After this you head west to Pithoragarh, and then south to Champawat
and Banbassa.
