YEAR OF THE TIGER

SIVA AND PARVATI ALTAR

Hindu shrines are regularly devoted to more than one deity. In this shrine, Siva is represented by the lingam, which is the cylindrical rock next to the white sign. One of the other images is his wife, the beautiful Parvati. She has many different aspects, or physical representations, including as Durga the terrible (also called Bhagwati), who rides a tiger, and the fierce Kali, who wears a garland of skulls.
