Dubai's skyline is often assumed to be built on oil money, but oil arrived later and faded faster than that image suggests. Offshore drilling found the Fateh field in 1966, and Dubai's first oil shipment did not go out until 1969. Production peaked in 1991 at about 410,000 barrels a day and has declined since; by 2018 reports estimated its reserves had roughly two decades left. The emirate's modern growth has instead been driven by trade, finance, and tourism built up after that oil boom had already begun to fade.
