Norfolk Island Travel Adapters

Type I (Australian Plug) • 240 volts • 50 Hz

Norfolk Island was resettled in 1856 by descendants of the HMS Bounty mutineers and their Tahitian companions, relocated from the overcrowded Pitcairn Island.

Norfolk Island uses mains electricity supplied at 240 volts at 50 Hz. Wall outlets in Norfolk Island use Type I, the same plug used in Australia and New Zealand and often called the Australian plug.

Travelers from the U.S. using Type A or Type B plugs need a travel adapter for Norfolk Island that covers Type I. A travel adapter changes the plug shape only and does not convert voltage. Devices marked for 100–240V input can be used on Norfolk Island's 240V supply with the correct adapter; equipment that is not dual voltage requires an appropriate voltage converter.

What Plug Type Does Norfolk Island Use?

Adapter may also be spelled adaptor. Converter may be spelled convertor. Grounded may also be described as earthed.
Norfolk Island uses the Type I plug and outlet system, the same standard used in Australia and New Zealand.
Some other adapter guides list Norfolk Island's voltage as a flat 230V, matching mainland Australia's harmonized standard. We checked this independently: a Norfolk Island travel resource states mains voltage there is "240 volts AC, 50 cycles," and the Norfolk Island Regional Council's own infrastructure page documents the island's generation and distribution network running at 415V three-phase, which corresponds to a 240V nominal single-phase design rather than the newer 230V standard. This page uses 240V based on that Norfolk-Island-specific evidence.

Norfolk Island Travel Adapter FAQ

Do I need a voltage converter for Norfolk Island?

Only if your device isn't dual voltage. Most phones, laptops, and cameras are rated for 100–240V and only need a plug adapter for Norfolk Island's Type I outlets. High-wattage single-voltage appliances, like hair dryers, straighteners, or some CPAP machines, need a voltage converter, not just an adapter. Check the device label for its voltage rating before you travel.

Can I use my US phone charger in Norfolk Island?

Phone and laptop chargers use a universal 100–240V power supply, so yours will work on Norfolk Island's 240V supply without a separate converter. You'll still need a Type I plug adapter, since the charger's US plug won't physically fit Norfolk Island's outlets.

Are Norfolk Island and US power outlets interchangeable?

No. Norfolk Island uses Type I outlets and the US uses Type A/B. The plug shapes are different, and Norfolk Island runs at 240V compared to 120V in the US, so a plug adapter alone is only safe for devices that already support both voltages.

Does Norfolk Island use the same plug as Australia?

Yes. Norfolk Island uses the same Type I plug and outlet system used in Australia and New Zealand, so a Type I travel adapter that works for those countries also works in Norfolk Island.
