Samoa Travel Adapters

Type I (Australian Plug) • 230 volts • 50 Hz

At the end of 2011, Samoa skipped December 30 entirely, jumping straight from December 29 to December 31, and moved to the west side of the International Date Line. Samoa now sees each new day among the first places on Earth, rather than one of the last.

Samoa uses mains electricity supplied at 230 volts at 50 Hz. Wall outlets in Samoa use Type I, the same plug used in Australia and New Zealand and often called the Australian plug.

Travelers from the U.S. using Type A or Type B plugs need a travel adapter for Samoa that covers Type I. A travel adapter changes the plug shape only and does not convert voltage. Devices marked for 100–240V input can be used on Samoa's 230V supply with the correct adapter; equipment that is not dual voltage requires an appropriate voltage converter.

What Plug Type Does Samoa Use?

Adapter may also be spelled adaptor. Converter may be spelled convertor. Grounded may also be described as earthed.
Samoa uses the Type I plug and outlet system, the same standard used in Australia and New Zealand. Some other adapter guides also list Type A and Type B for Samoa. We checked this independently: those plug types belong to American Samoa, a separate U.S. territory with its own 120V/60Hz supply, not to independent Samoa. Independent Samoa (the country covered on this page) uses Type I only, so Type A and Type B are not included here.

Samoa Travel Adapter FAQ

Do I need a voltage converter for Samoa?

Only if your device isn't dual voltage. Most phones, laptops, and cameras are rated for 100–240V and only need a plug adapter for Samoa's Type I outlets. High-wattage single-voltage appliances, like hair dryers, straighteners, or some CPAP machines, need a voltage converter, not just an adapter. Check the device label for its voltage rating before you travel.

Can I use my US phone charger in Samoa?

Phone and laptop chargers use a universal 100–240V power supply, so yours will work on Samoa's 230V supply without a separate converter. You'll still need a Type I plug adapter, since the charger's US plug won't physically fit Samoa's outlets.

Are Samoa and US power outlets interchangeable?

No. Samoa uses Type I outlets and the US uses Type A/B. The plug shapes are different, and Samoa runs at 230V compared to 120V in the US, so a plug adapter alone is only safe for devices that already support both voltages.

Does Samoa use the same plug as Australia?

Yes. Samoa uses the same Type I plug and outlet system used in Australia and New Zealand, so a Type I travel adapter that works for those countries also works in Samoa.
