Sark Travel Adapters

Type G • 230 volts • 50 Hz

Sark generates its own electricity rather than drawing from a mainland grid, and the system is showing its age. Power comes from four diesel generators that a 2021 safety review found largely unsafe and near the end of their working life, with some transformers nearly 70 years old. There's no backup connection to the outside world, so the island is now funding a replacement, island-owned system.

Sark is part of the Bailiwick of Guernsey, a British Crown Dependency, and sets its own laws through its parliament, Chief Pleas. Cars are banned entirely on the island, with only tractors, bicycles, and a few battery-powered buggies for elderly or disabled residents allowed on its roads. There's no street lighting, which helped Sark become the world's first Dark Sky Island, a designation it received in January 2011. The island's population was 562 at the last census.

Sark uses mains electricity supplied at 230 volts at 50 Hz. Wall outlets use Type G plugs, the same standard used throughout the United Kingdom and the rest of the Channel Islands. Travelers from regions that use different plug types should bring a compatible travel adapter. Visitors should confirm that their electronic devices support 100–240V input or use an appropriate voltage converter if necessary.

Sark Travel Adapter FAQ

Do I need a voltage converter for Sark?

Only if your device isn't dual voltage. Most phones, laptops, and cameras are rated for 100–240V and only need a plug adapter for outlets on Sark. High-wattage single-voltage appliances, like hair dryers, straighteners, or some CPAP machines, need a voltage converter, not just an adapter. Check the device label for its voltage rating before you travel.

Can I use my US phone charger in Sark?

Most modern phone and laptop chargers are rated for 100–240V, so they work on the 230V supply used on Sark without a separate converter. You'll still need a plug adapter, since the charger's US plug won't physically fit the local outlets.

Are Sark and US power outlets interchangeable?

No. Sark uses Type G outlets and the US uses Type A/B. The plug shapes are different, and the local supply runs at 230V compared to 120V in the US, so a plug adapter alone is only safe for devices that already support both voltages.

Does Sark use more than one plug type?

No. Sark uses a single plug type, Type G, a grounded plug with two rectangular pins and a top earth pin arranged in a triangular pattern. It's the same standard used throughout the United Kingdom and the rest of the Channel Islands.
