Bulgaria Travel Adapters

Type C & Type F • 230 volts • 50 Hz

Bulgaria's traditional yogurt gave its name to science. In 1905, 27-year-old Bulgarian medical student Stamen Grigorov, working in a microbiology lab in Geneva, isolated the bacterium responsible for yogurt's fermentation from homemade Bulgarian yogurt. The scientific community named the bacterium Lactobacillus bulgaricus in recognition of his discovery; it is now classified as Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. bulgaricus and remains in use by yogurt producers worldwide.

Bulgaria is a country in southeastern Europe located on the Balkan Peninsula along the western coast of the Black Sea. It borders Romania, Serbia, North Macedonia, Greece, and Turkey. The capital city is Sofia. Bulgaria is known for its mountain ranges, historic monasteries, Black Sea beaches, and a long cultural history influenced by Thracian, Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman civilizations.

Bulgaria uses mains electricity supplied at about 230 volts at 50 Hz. Wall outlets use Type C and Type F sockets. Travelers from regions that use different plug types should bring a compatible travel adapter. Visitors should confirm that their electronic devices support 100–240V input or use an appropriate voltage converter if necessary.

Bulgaria Travel Adapter FAQ

Do I need a voltage converter for Bulgaria?

Only if your device isn't dual voltage. Most phones, laptops, and cameras are rated for 100–240V and only need a plug adapter for Bulgaria's outlets. High-wattage single-voltage appliances, like hair dryers, straighteners, or some CPAP machines, need a voltage converter, not just an adapter. Check the device label for its voltage rating before you travel.

Can I use my US phone charger in Bulgaria?

Most modern phone and laptop chargers are rated for 100–240V, so they work on Bulgaria's 230V supply without a separate converter. You'll still need a plug adapter, since the charger's US plug won't physically fit Bulgaria's outlets.

Are Bulgaria and US power outlets interchangeable?

No. Bulgaria uses Type C and Type F outlets and the US uses Type A/B. The plug shapes are different, and Bulgaria runs at 230V compared to 120V in the US, so a plug adapter alone is only safe for devices that already support both voltages.

Does Bulgaria use more than one plug type?

Yes. Bulgaria uses two plug types: Type C, a two round-pin Europlug, and Type F, a grounded Schuko-style plug with two earthing clips. An adapter rated for Type F will also fit Type C sockets, so either one will work throughout the country.
