Type E and Type F outlets both use two round current contacts and provide grounding, but they use different grounding methods. Type E uses a projecting grounding pin in the outlet, while Type F Schuko outlets use grounding contacts along the sides.

Is Type E/F the Right Grounded Adapter for Europe?

A combined Type E/F adapter works with both Type E and Type F grounded outlet systems, providing one grounded adapter for both systems.

It is not the grounded system used everywhere in Europe. The United Kingdom and Ireland use Type G, Switzerland and Liechtenstein use Type J, Denmark uses Type K, and Italy uses Type L. Check the adapter guide by country before travel.

Type E/F Compared with Type C

Type C Europlug has two round pins but no grounding connection. Type C plugs fit Type E and Type F outlets, but they do not provide grounding. Equipment that requires grounding should use a grounded adapter that maintains the grounding connection, such as the combined Type E/F adapter shown here where Type E/F outlets are used.

Combined Type E/F adapters are designed to provide grounded compatibility with both Type E and Type F outlet systems. The hybrid CEE 7/7 plug combines the female grounding contact required for Type E sockets with the side grounding contacts used by Type F Schuko sockets. Its two round current pins are 4.8 mm in diameter, 19 mm long, and spaced 19 mm apart center to center. The Type E grounding contact is positioned 10 mm from the centerline between the two current pins; the projecting Type E socket grounding pin is 4.8 mm in diameter and 14 mm long. Type F grounding contacts are positioned approximately 16 mm from the centerline between the current pins, and Type F sockets are recessed about 15 mm. Type E/F systems are commonly rated for currents up to 16A and voltages up to 250V. Adapter may also be spelled adaptor, grounded may also be described as earthed, and Type F is commonly known as Schuko.
