Saint-Barthélemy Travel Adapters
Type C & Type E • 230 volts • 60 Hz
France ceded Saint-Barthélemy to Sweden in 1784 in exchange for trading rights in the port of Gothenburg. Sweden ruled the island for nearly a century, declaring its harbor town a free port and renaming it Gustavia after King Gustav III. France repurchased the island in 1877 and officially reoccupied it on March 16, 1878.
Saint-Barthélemy is a small volcanic island in the French Antilles, covering about 8 square miles. Gustavia, its capital and main harbor, still carries free-port status today, and the island's economy now relies on tourism and duty-free retail. It has formed its own French overseas collectivity, separate from Guadeloupe, since 2007.
Saint-Barthélemy uses mains electricity supplied at 230 volts at 60 Hz, the same plug standard as mainland France on a different frequency common in parts of the eastern Caribbean. Wall outlets use Type C and Type E. Travelers from regions that use different plug types need a travel adapter; equipment that is not dual voltage requires an appropriate voltage converter.

Do I need a voltage converter for Saint-Barthélemy?
Only if your device isn't dual voltage. Most phones, laptops, and cameras are rated for 100–240V and only need a plug adapter for Saint-Barthélemy's outlets. High-wattage single-voltage appliances, like hair dryers, straighteners, or some CPAP machines, need a voltage converter, not just an adapter. Check the device label for its voltage rating before you travel.
Can I use my US phone charger in Saint-Barthélemy?
Most modern phone and laptop chargers are rated for 100–240V, so they work on Saint-Barthélemy's 230V supply without a separate converter. You'll still need a plug adapter, since the charger's US plug won't physically fit Saint-Barthélemy's outlets.
Are Saint-Barthélemy and US power outlets interchangeable?
No. Saint-Barthélemy uses Type C and Type E outlets and the US uses Type A/B. The plug shapes are different, and Saint-Barthélemy runs at 230V compared to 120V in the US, so a plug adapter alone is only safe for devices that already support both voltages.
Does Saint-Barthélemy use more than one plug type?
Yes. Saint-Barthélemy uses two plug types, the same standard found throughout mainland France: Type E, a grounded plug with two round pins and a protruding earth pin, and Type C, an ungrounded two round-pin Europlug that also fits Type E sockets.
