Tahiti Travel Adapters
Type C & Type E • About 220 volts • 60 Hz
HMS Bounty anchored at Tahiti's Matavai Bay in October 1788 to collect breadfruit plants for Britain's Caribbean colonies. The crew spent nearly five months on the island, with many men living ashore, before finishing the work and sailing on in April 1789. The mutiny against Captain Bligh erupted just three weeks later.
Tahiti is the largest island in French Polynesia's Society Islands archipelago, formed from two extinct shield volcanoes. It's made up of two landmasses, the larger Tahiti Nui and the smaller, more isolated Tahiti Iti, joined by a narrow isthmus. Papeete, French Polynesia's capital, sits on Tahiti's northwest coast, and the island is home to roughly two-thirds of the territory's population.
Tahiti uses mains electricity supplied at about 220 volts at 60 Hz, the same standard used throughout French Polynesia. Wall outlets use Type C and Type E. Travelers from regions that use different plug types need a travel adapter; equipment that is not dual voltage requires an appropriate voltage converter.

Adapter may also be spelled adaptor. Converter may be spelled convertor. Grounded may also be described as earthed.
Tahiti uses Type C and Type E outlets, the same standard used throughout French Polynesia. Type E is grounded with a protruding earth pin; the ungrounded Type C Europlug also fits Type E sockets.

Do I need a voltage converter for Tahiti?
Only if your device isn't dual voltage. Most phones, laptops, and cameras are rated for 100–240V and only need a plug adapter for Tahiti's outlets. High-wattage single-voltage appliances, like hair dryers, straighteners, or some CPAP machines, need a voltage converter, not just an adapter. Check the device label for its voltage rating before you travel.
Can I use my US phone charger in Tahiti?
Most modern phone and laptop chargers are rated for 100–240V, so they work on Tahiti's electrical supply without a separate converter. You'll still need a plug adapter, since the charger's US plug won't physically fit Tahiti's outlets.
Are Tahiti and US power outlets interchangeable?
No. Tahiti uses Type C and Type E outlets and the US uses Type A/B. The plug shapes are different, and Tahiti runs at about 220V compared to 120V in the US, so a plug adapter alone is only safe for devices that already support both voltages.
Does Tahiti use more than one plug type?
Yes. Tahiti uses two plug types, the same standard found throughout French Polynesia: Type E, a grounded plug with two round pins and a protruding earth pin, and Type C, an ungrounded two round-pin Europlug that also fits Type E sockets.
