Madeira Travel Adapters

Type C and Type F • 230 volts • 50 Hz

Madeira Airport's runway sits on a dramatic extension built where there was no room to expand on land. Completed in 2000, the 2,781-meter platform is held up by 180 columns roughly 70 meters tall, standing over the ocean like a bridge. In 2017 the airport was renamed for Madeira-born footballer Cristiano Ronaldo, whose bust now stands in the terminal.

Madeira is a Portuguese archipelago in the North Atlantic, roughly 500 miles southwest of mainland Portugal. The main island is volcanic and mountainous, with Funchal as its capital, and forms one of Portugal's two autonomous regions alongside the Azores. It's known for its subtropical climate and centuries-old levada irrigation channels, now popular hiking trails.

Madeira uses mains electricity supplied at 230 volts at 50 Hz, the same standard as mainland Portugal. Wall outlets use Type C and Type F, with Type F standard for new installations. Travelers from regions that use different plug types need a travel adapter; equipment that is not dual voltage requires an appropriate voltage converter.

Adapter may also be spelled adaptor. Converter may be spelled convertor. Grounded may also be described as earthed.
Madeira uses Type C and Type F outlets, the same standard used throughout mainland Portugal. Type F, also known as the Schuko plug, is grounded; the ungrounded Type C Europlug also fits Type F sockets.

Madeira Travel Adapter FAQ

Do I need a voltage converter for Madeira?

Only if your device isn't dual voltage. Most phones, laptops, and cameras are rated for 100–240V and only need a plug adapter for Madeira's outlets. High-wattage single-voltage appliances, like hair dryers, straighteners, or some CPAP machines, need a voltage converter, not just an adapter. Check the device label for its voltage rating before you travel.

Can I use my US phone charger in Madeira?

Most modern phone and laptop chargers are rated for 100–240V, so they work on Madeira's 230V supply without a separate converter. You'll still need a plug adapter, since the charger's US plug won't physically fit Madeira's outlets.

Are Madeira and US power outlets interchangeable?

No. Madeira uses Type C and Type F outlets and the US uses Type A/B. The plug shapes are different, and Madeira runs at 230V compared to 120V in the US, so a plug adapter alone is only safe for devices that already support both voltages.

Does Madeira use more than one plug type?

Yes. Madeira uses two plug types, the same standard found throughout mainland Portugal: Type F, a grounded two round-pin Schuko plug, and Type C, an ungrounded two round-pin Europlug that also fits Type F sockets.
