Switzerland Type J Travel Adapter (SN 441011)

Switzerland Type J grounded travel adapter with three round pins

Switzerland and Liechtenstein use the grounded Type J plug. It has three round pins arranged in a triangular pattern.

A Type J travel adapter, also spelled Type J travel adaptor, Switzerland adapter, Swiss adaptor plug, or Liechtenstein adapter, changes the plug shape only. It does not convert voltage.

This grounded adapter accepts plug styles from all countries except Type M. Large European Schuko plugs, called Type E/F, fit but are not grounded.

What Plug and Travel Adapter Do I Need for Switzerland?

Switzerland uses the Type J plug. Travelers bringing U.S. plugs need a US-to-Switzerland Type J power adapter or travel adapter for outlets in Zurich, Geneva, Basel, Bern, Lucerne, Lausanne, and everywhere else in Switzerland.

U.S. Type A and Type B plugs do not fit Swiss Type J wall outlets without an adapter. The adapter changes the plug shape from the U.S. configuration to the Swiss Type J configuration.

For complete country information, see the Switzerland plug and adapter guide.

What Plug and Travel Adapter Do I Need for Liechtenstein?

Liechtenstein uses the same Type J plug system as Switzerland. Travelers bringing U.S. plugs need a US-to-Liechtenstein Type J power adapter or travel adapter.

The same Type J adapter works in both Switzerland and Liechtenstein. U.S. plugs do not fit Type J wall outlets without an adapter.

For complete country information, see the Liechtenstein plug and adapter guide.

Will a European Two-Pin Plug Work in Switzerland?

The common European plug with two round pins is called Type C. It fits Type J outlets in Switzerland and Liechtenstein but does not provide grounding. The device must also be rated for 230V electricity. Equipment that requires grounding needs a grounded Type J adapter.

Countries Using Type J

Switzerland and Liechtenstein use Type J. Adapter is also spelled adaptor, and grounded is also described as earthed.
