Greenland Travel Adapters

Type C, Type F, and Type K • 230 volts • 50 Hz

Around 982, Erik the Red explored Greenland's west coast while exiled from Iceland for three years. He returned in 985 with settlers, deliberately naming the land Greenland rather than something icier-sounding, reasoning a favorable name would draw more colonists. Of the 25 ships that set out that summer, only 14 completed the crossing.

Greenland is an autonomous territory of Denmark located between the Arctic and Atlantic Oceans. The island is the largest in the world and is known for its vast ice sheet, glaciers, and Arctic landscapes. The capital city is Nuuk, which serves as the political and cultural center of Greenland.

Greenland uses mains electricity supplied at about 230 volts at 50 Hz. Wall outlets use Type C, Type F, and Type K sockets. Travelers from regions that use different plug types should bring a compatible travel adapter. Visitors should confirm that their electronic devices support 100–240V input or use an appropriate voltage converter if necessary.

Adapter may also be spelled adaptor. Converter may be spelled convertor. Grounded may also be described as earthed.
Greenland uses Type C, Type F, and Type K outlets, the same standard used throughout Denmark. Type K and Type F (also known as Schuko) are both grounded; the ungrounded Type C Europlug also fits both socket types.

Greenland Travel Adapter FAQ

Do I need a voltage converter for Greenland?

Only if your device isn't dual voltage. Most phones, laptops, and cameras are rated for 100–240V and only need a plug adapter for Greenland's outlets. High-wattage single-voltage appliances, like hair dryers, straighteners, or some CPAP machines, need a voltage converter, not just an adapter. Check the device label for its voltage rating before you travel.

Can I use my US phone charger in Greenland?

Most modern phone and laptop chargers are rated for 100–240V, so they work on Greenland's 230V supply without a separate converter. You'll still need a plug adapter, since the charger's US plug won't physically fit Greenland's outlets.

Are Greenland and US power outlets interchangeable?

No. Greenland uses Type C, Type F, and Type K outlets and the US uses Type A/B. The plug shapes are different, and Greenland runs at 230V compared to 120V in the US, so a plug adapter alone is only safe for devices that already support both voltages.

Does Greenland use more than one plug type?

Yes. Greenland uses the same standard found throughout Denmark: Type K, a grounded plug with two round pins and a protruding earth pin, Type F, a grounded two round-pin Schuko plug, and Type C, an ungrounded two round-pin Europlug that fits both Type F and Type K sockets.
