Hong Kong Travel Adapters

Hong Kong is a special administrative region on China’s southern coast. Mains electricity is supplied at 220 volts at 50 Hz, and standard wall outlets use Type G, the British-style three-square-pin plug.
Travelers from regions that use different plug types need a travel adapter for Type G; equipment that is not dual voltage requires an appropriate voltage converter.

Hong Kong uses a standard supply of 220V AC at 50 Hz, and Type G is the standard plug type travelers will normally encounter.
Hong Kong electrical standards also recognize some older three-round-pin Type D (BS 546) plugs, still found occasionally in pre-1970s buildings. Most visitors should plan on Type G, but older or specialized outlets may differ.

Do I need a voltage converter for Hong Kong?
Only if your device isn't dual voltage. Most phones, laptops, and cameras are rated for 100–240V and only need a plug adapter for Hong Kong's outlets. High-wattage single-voltage appliances, like hair dryers, straighteners, or some CPAP machines, need a voltage converter, not just an adapter. Check the device label for its voltage rating before you travel.
Can I use my US phone charger in Hong Kong?
Most modern phone and laptop chargers are rated for 100–240V, so they work on Hong Kong's 220V supply without a separate converter. You'll still need a plug adapter, since the charger's US plug won't physically fit Hong Kong's outlets.
Are Hong Kong and US power outlets interchangeable?
No. Hong Kong uses Type G outlets and the US uses Type A/B. The plug shapes are different, and Hong Kong runs at 220V compared to 120V in the US, so a plug adapter alone is only safe for devices that already support both voltages.
