In January 2008, archaeologists led by Japanese explorer Daisuke Takahashi, working with Scotland's National Museums and Chilean researchers, excavated a hillside campsite above Cumberland Bay and recovered the tip of a navigational divider, a tool that could only have belonged to a ship's officer. It matched the documented role of Scottish sailor Alexander Selkirk, who was marooned on the island in 1704 after a dispute with his captain and survived alone for more than four years before his rescue in February 1709, a story that inspired Daniel Defoe's novel Robinson Crusoe.
The Juan Fernández Islands are a small group of islands in the South Pacific Ocean located west of mainland Chile. The islands are part of Chile and include Robinson Crusoe Island, Alejandro Selkirk Island, and Santa Clara Island. The capital and main settlement is San Juan Bautista on Robinson Crusoe Island. The islands are known for their unique wildlife and their connection to the story that inspired the novel Robinson Crusoe.
The Juan Fernández Islands use the same electrical system as mainland Chile, with mains electricity supplied at 220 volts at 50 Hz. Wall outlets use Type C and Type L. Do I need a voltage converter for the Juan Fernández Islands?
