North America Travel Adapter: Three Countries, One Plug

North America is an easy one. The United States, Canada, and Mexico all use the same flat-blade plugs, so a road trip from Vancouver to Cancun never needs an adapter if you start from the US. Visitors from everywhere else need one Type B adapter.

The Short Answer

  • Type A plug drawing
From the US: no adapter needed. The United States, Canada, and Mexico all use Type A and Type B.
  • Type B plug drawing
Visiting from Europe with grounded Type E/F (Schuko) plugs: bring a grounded Type E/F to Type B adapter. Everyone else: bring a Type B adapter.
  • Type C plug drawing
The one exception: Saint Pierre and Miquelon uses Type C and Type E/F, at 220–240V.
  • Voltage: the United States and Canada use 120V / 60Hz. Mexico uses 127V, and 110V and 120V devices generally work there without a converter. A plug adapter changes the plug shape only and does not convert voltage.

Visiting from Europe? Grounded Type E/F to Type B

Everyone Else: Type B Adapter

The Type B adapter shown here accepts plug styles from most countries. South African Type M plugs do not fit. Grounded Type E and Type F (Schuko) plugs do not fit either. Use the Europe adapter above.

Voltage in North America

The United States and Canada use 120V / 60Hz. Mexico uses 127V, and devices rated 110V or 120V generally work there without a converter. Saint Pierre and Miquelon uses 220–240V. A 120V-only device needs a voltage converter there unless it is dual voltage. See the voltage guide and dual-voltage appliances.

Adapter may also be spelled adaptor, and grounded may also be described as earthed. See all international plug types.
