Africa Travel Adapter: Fifty-Five Countries, Mostly One Plug
Africa is big, but the plug story is simpler than the map suggests. Two round pins work across North, West, and Central Africa, East Africa and the former British countries lean on Type G, and Southern Africa has its own heavyweight, Type M. One universal adapter covers every country but one. Mind the voltage.
The Short Answer
Southern Africa uses Type M and Type N. Type M outlets do not work with any other plug, so bring a Type M adapter for Lesotho and for any Type M outlet you meet in South Africa, Botswana, Eswatini, Namibia, or Mozambique.- Easiest: the Ceptics adapter works in every country on this page except Lesotho, including South African outlets that are not Type M. It does not fit Type D or Type M outlets. If you meet one, use the Type D or Type M adapter below.
- Voltage: 220–240V throughout. A plug adapter does not convert voltage. See voltage below.

Voltage in Africa
220–240V: every country on this page. A 120V-only device needs a voltage converter anywhere in Africa unless it is dual voltage.
See the voltage guide and dual-voltage appliances before you pack the hair dryer.
Adapter may also be spelled adaptor, and grounded may also be described as earthed. See all international plug types.
