South America Travel Adapter: A Continent of Mixed Outlets
South America uses a wide mix of plug types. Two round pins get you through most of it, the north coast runs on US-style plugs, and Argentina, Brazil, and Chile each add their own twist. One universal adapter covers the whole continent. Mind the voltage.
The Short Answer
- Easiest: the Ceptics adapter covers Type A, C, G, and I, which is every country on this page. It does not fit Type D outlets. If you meet one, use the Type D adapter below.
Visiting from Europe with grounded Type E/F (Schuko) plugs: bring a grounded Type E/F to Type B adapter for the Type A/B countries. Everyone else: bring a Type B adapter.- Voltage: most of South America uses 220–240V. Brazil and Suriname use both 127V and 220V, and Guyana uses both 220V and 110V. A plug adapter does not convert voltage. See voltage below.

Visiting from Europe? Grounded Type E/F to Type B
Everyone Else: Type B Adapter
The Type B adapter shown here accepts plug styles from most countries. South African Type M plugs do not fit. Grounded Type E and Type F (Schuko) plugs do not fit either. Use the Europe adapter above.

Voltage in South America
110–120V: Colombia, Ecuador, and Venezuela.
220–240V: Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Falkland Islands, French Guiana, Paraguay, Peru, and Uruguay. A 120V-only device needs a voltage converter in these countries unless it is dual voltage.
Mixed: Brazil and Suriname use both 127V and 220V. Guyana uses both 220V and 110V. Check the label before you plug in.
See the voltage guide and dual-voltage appliances before you pack the hair dryer.
Adapter may also be spelled adaptor, and grounded may also be described as earthed. See all international plug types.
