Buy a Travel Plug Adapter

A travel plug adapter, also spelled adaptor, lets your plug fit a foreign wall outlet. It does not convert voltage. Before buying, check your destination’s outlet shape, your device’s voltage label, and whether you need only a plug adapter or a separate voltage converter.

1. Match the plug type

Start with the plug and outlet style used at your destination. The same country may use more than one outlet type, so check the country page or the plug-type reference before packing.

2. Check your device voltage

Chargers and electronics labeled 100–240V usually work worldwide with the correct plug adapter or adaptor. Single-voltage devices may need a voltage converter.

3. Watch high-wattage appliances

Hair dryers, curling irons, straighteners, kettles, and other heat appliances are the troublemakers. Check wattage and voltage before using them overseas.

4. Choose the right adapter style

  • Simple plug adapters are small and cheap.
  • Universal adapters cover many countries in one kit.
  • USB-C and USB-A ports are useful for phones and tablets.
  • Adapters do not convert voltage.

Need to identify the outlet first? Use the international plug types reference, browse travel adapters by country, or review 110V vs. 220V travel power before buying.
